A Direct Glimpse of Awakening

A direct experience of consciousness. What Is Nonduality?

Nonduality is the recognition that there is no fundamental separation between you and the world, between subject and object, between experience and experiencer. It is the realization that what you are is not a limited, individual self, but rather boundless awareness—always present, always whole.

Many spiritual traditions point to this truth, whether through self-inquiry, meditation, or deep contemplation. However, nonduality is not just an intellectual concept; it is an experiential reality. It is not something you need to achieve, but something to recognize—something that has always been true, hidden only by layers of conditioned beliefs and identification with thought.

How This Meditation Supports the Recognition of Nonduality

This guided meditation is designed to lead you into a direct experience of nondual awareness. By shifting attention away from effort, conceptual thinking, and the illusion of separateness, the process reveals the spaciousness of your true nature.

Let’s walk through the steps of the meditation, each designed to bring about a deeper recognition of what is already here.

Step 1: Entering Effortless Presence

The session begins with a simple yet profound instruction: abandon all effort.

Effort belongs to the mind—it is the mind that constantly seeks, analyzes, and attempts to control experience. In this meditation, you are invited to let go of all striving and allow everything to be exactly as it is.

Close your eyes. Let your body settle. There is nothing to fix, nothing to achieve.

Allow all sensory perceptions—sights, sounds, textures, smells—to be present without resistance. Notice the thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations that arise, but do not engage with them. Simply let them unfold, just as clouds move through the sky.

This is the first glimpse into nonduality: when there is no resistance to experience, there is no separate self that needs to manage or control it.

Step 2: Sensing the Intelligence of Awareness

Once the body and mind begin to settle, the meditation shifts attention toward something deeper: the intelligence of awareness itself.

You are invited to perceive everything—not from the usual perspective of a thinker inside a body—but from the space in which all thoughts, emotions, and sensations appear. This is the field of awareness, the formless presence that is always here.

There is no need to manipulate emotions or quiet the mind. Instead, you allow the intelligence of the universe to be responsible for everything. Awareness is already functioning perfectly; the only thing required is recognition.

Rather than focusing on thoughts as personal or separate, notice that they are movements within the same field—just like sounds, sensations, and perceptions. They are not owned by anyone; they simply arise.

This step supports the recognition that you are not an entity within awareness; you are awareness itself.

Step 3: Meeting Emotions as Honored Guests

A core insight in this meditation is that resistance is the root of suffering.

You are invited to meet every emotion, every feeling—especially fear, insecurity, or lack—as an honored guest. Rather than pushing discomfort away or trying to dissolve it, you greet it with openness:

"Ah, fear. You’re here. Welcome. You are just the one I wanted to see tonight."

This level of openness and trust allows the contraction of the separate self to dissolve. When emotions are no longer seen as personal burdens but as expressions of the vast intelligence of life, they lose their power to create suffering.

The meditation gently reminds: do not pretend to welcome emotions while secretly trying to get rid of them. True acceptance is not a strategy to eliminate, but a recognition that nothing needs to be eliminated.

Step 4: Shifting from Thought to Direct Experience

At this stage, a deep inquiry is introduced: How does it feel to be you?

This is not an intellectual question—it is an invitation to experience the felt sense of being.

Before thought arises, before language defines anything—what is here?

Instead of searching for an answer, simply rest in the question. Allow attention to move toward the sense of presence itself, before any concepts of "I" or "me" arise.

By doing this, the contraction of the separate self begins to fade. The sense of "I" as a mental construct is revealed to be nothing more than a habit of thought. What remains is spacious, silent awareness—the effortless knowing of being.

This is nonduality in direct experience.

Step 5: Awareness as an Infinite Ocean

A powerful metaphor is introduced:

"Allow this universal field to feel like an ocean. All your thoughts, sensations, and emotions are like waves, currents, and whirlpools in the ocean."

This imagery helps dissolve the illusion of separation. Each wave is distinct, yet not separate from the ocean itself.

You are invited to sense that thoughts are like waves, but they do not exist apart from awareness.

The practice encourages seeing every sensation and thought as part of the same indivisible field—whether it is a sensation in the body, a sound, or even the concept of "myself."

And just as the ocean remains unchanged when a wave rises and falls, so too does awareness remain untouched by the temporary movements of thought and feeling.

This recognition leads to a deep peace.

Step 6: The Freedom of Non-Identification

Finally, the meditation invites you to leave behind even the concept of "my body."

Without relying on language, without defining anything—what remains?

Can you see that your body, your thoughts, and the external world are all arising within the same field of presence?

And if everything appears within this presence, can there truly be separation?

This is the core realization of nonduality: there is no boundary between you and the world. There is only this one, vast, silent presence in which all experiences unfold.

Final Reflection: Living from This Recognition

As the meditation draws to a close, you are reminded:

  • There is no need to control life. Everything unfolds within the intelligence of awareness.

  • There is no need to push away emotions. They are simply waves in the ocean of being.

  • There is no need to grasp at understanding. Awareness already knows itself.

This is not a philosophy or belief—it is the simplest, most direct recognition of what has always been here.

Nonduality is not something to attain. It is the effortless, silent presence that has never been absent.

All that remains is to live from this recognition.
